A fifth family has signed a letter of intent to join 304 Homestead and is working through the final steps. We are also talking with some remarkable people about becoming the home’s live-in household leaders, all while Carmen Vasquez and Robyn Heeks are completing extensive renovations on 304 and home modifications specific for each resident are being done.

That is exciting news for a house that began with four families deciding to build something together. It is also the right moment to introduce the next opportunity: Isaac House, in Durham’s North Street community.

We are moving forward with plans to acquire Isaac House from Reality Ministries and bring together founding families. Families on our residential priority list will have the first opportunity to explore the home, understand the particulars, and decide whether it is right for them.

Another table is taking shape.

## What 304 Is Teaching Us

On May 28, four founding families formed an LLC and closed on 304 Homestead Road, a couple of doors from 406, the original G House.

![A normal day at the G House](https://blog.thegcommunity.org/hs-fs/hubfs/01M4YCV4WPA0CSH3XV95XK9C0D.jpg?width=4032&height=3024&name=01M4YCV4WPA0CSH3XV95XK9C0D.jpg)

*A normal day at the G House*

They did more than buy a property. They began working out how to own a home together, share its responsibilities, and build a community around their sons and daughters.

For Barbara and me, this work comes back to a question we share with many parents: Who will be part of our child’s everyday life when we are no longer here?

A house alone cannot answer that. Neither can a set of legal documents. But a home, committed people, clear agreements, and ongoing support give us something concrete to build on.

304 is helping us learn how those pieces fit together. Each home gives us experience we can carry into the next.

## Ownership, Shared Life, and a Voice

The G House brings together three things: family ownership, cooperative governance, and a live-in community.

Families invest together through a Co-op business entity that owns the home. Operating agreements establish how decisions are made, how costs are shared, and what responsibilities come with ownership. Residents and families help shape the household, with the preferences and needs of the people living there at the center.

Household leaders share daily life in the home. They help sustain the relationships and ordinary rhythms that make a household work: meals, conversations, celebrations, and showing up for one another.

Housing and care require distinct arrangements. Families work through the support each resident needs and how it will be provided and funded. The G House team helps with development and ongoing management so families have support in carrying the responsibilities of ownership, especially when they are gone.

The model takes commitment, resources, and a willingness to work through decisions together. For families seeking an ownership stake and a defined voice in their loved one’s home, it offers a path worth exploring.

## More Paths to Belonging

We are enthusiastic supporters of HOPE NC, L’Arche North Carolina, and the other organizations expanding housing and community opportunities for adults with disabilities.

We were glad to celebrate HOPE NC’s grand opening. Its work connects housing with opportunities for inclusion and friendship. L’Arche’s commitment to people with and without disabilities sharing daily life speaks directly to something we value at The G House.

Our contribution to this wider effort is a family ownership model built around cooperative governance and live-in community. Families can bring private resources together to help create a home and take an ongoing role in its stewardship.

There is room for different approaches. More options give individuals and families a better chance of finding a home that fits their lives.

## How to Explore Isaac House, or a Future Home

Because our model involves ownership, shared responsibilities, and household compatibility, getting involved takes more than adding a name to a waiting list.

First, learn about the model. Meet with us. Ask about ownership, ongoing costs, care, household leaders, and the long run. Tell us what a good life looks like for the person who would live in the home.

Then, if the approach fits, join the residential priority list. You will get an inside view of how the model is evolving and the first opportunity to explore the homes we bring forward.

When a particular home interests you, we work through the details together. That includes visiting, reviewing financial and architectural information, understanding support needs, and getting to know the other prospective residents and families.

Joining the priority list does not obligate you to move forward with Isaac House or any particular property. You can explore an opportunity and decide to wait for another.

The goal is to bring together people who want to make that particular home work, with a clear understanding of what they are choosing.

Supportive employment is growing too. At G Day ([theGday.com](https://thegday.com)), Colby is leading the way. Recently Gunnar and Colby printed shirts for Families Moving Forward, a homeless shelter in Durham. If you have any printing or promotional needs, please reach out to us.

## Join Us on November 9

Barbara and I will join L’Arche North Carolina for a breakout session at HOPE NC’s Inclusive Housing Summit on Monday, November 9, at the Friday Conference Center in Chapel Hill.

We will discuss how our two organizations approach housing for people with higher support needs while building connections to the wider community. It is an opportunity to ask questions, hear different approaches, and meet people working toward the same hope.

[Learn more about the summit and register.](https://www.hopenorthcarolina.org/summit.html)

If you are curious about Isaac House or a future G House, [start with a conversation](https://thegcommunity.org/meet). We can meet in person, by phone, or over Zoom.

304 began with families willing to sit down together and work through the possibilities. We look forward to meeting the people who will help shape the next home.

We’ll pull up a chair.

With gratitude and grit,

Eric Levin
